Catching shiny Pokémon is one of the most exciting challenges for many fans. In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, there is the item known as the Shiny Charm (German: Schillerpin) that significantly improves your odds of encountering wild shinies. In this guide, I’ll walk you step by step through how to obtain the Shiny Charm, explain what it does, cover additional mechanics you can combine, and point out pitfalls to watch for – all in clear, practical language.
What is the Shiny Charm?
The Shiny Charm is a Key Item in the Pokémon series, introduced in Generation V. It increases the probability of encountering wild Pokémon that are shiny.
In Scarlet & Violet, having the Shiny Charm raises the wild shiny encounter rate from the base 1 in 4,096 to around 1 in 1,365.67.
Important: once you obtain the Shiny Charm, it applies permanently in your game. You do not have to equip or activate it.
However, it does not affect every type of encounter. Encounters obtained via fixed events, NPC trades, or story-locked battles (so-called “shiny-locked” Pokémon) are generally excluded from the Shiny Charm’s bonus.
In Which Generation Was the Shiny Charm Introduced?
- The Shiny Charm first appeared in Generation V, for example in Pokémon Black 2 / White 2.
- From Generation VI onward, it persisted, and its effect was refined – it grants two extra rerolls when checking for shininess.
- In Generation IX (Scarlet & Violet), its effect remains: those extra rerolls contribute to a roughly tripled chance in wild encounters.
Where and How to Get the Shiny Charm in Scarlet and Violet
1. Complete the Paldea Pokédex
The core requirement is to catch all 400 Pokémon in the Paldea Pokédex. Only after doing so will you become eligible to receive the Shiny Charm.
A common question: “Is seeing them enough?” — No. In Scarlet & Violet, “caught” counts, not just seen. If a Pokémon is only battled or viewed but never caught, it usually doesn’t count toward the completion required for the Shiny Charm. (Fixed / event Pokémon may complicate this.)
2. Report to Jacq at the Academy
Once the Pokédex is complete, you need to visit Jacq at the academy in Mesagoza. He will verify your Pokédex and award you the Shiny Charm.
After that, the item is permanently active. You don’t need to carry or equip it.

In Scarlet & Violet, clearing 60 or more in a mass outbreak gives you three total rolls (if no other buff), or higher with Shiny Charm. - Sparkling Power (Sandwich Boosts)
Once you unlock 5-star Tera Raids, you can gather Herba Mystica and cook Sandwiches that grant “Sparkling Power,” which temporarily boosts shiny odds for a specific type for 30 minutes. With Sparkling Power Level 3 alone, your rate (for that type) can improve to 1 in 1,024 in wild encounters. - Combining Methods for Best Odds
If you stack Shiny Charm + Mass Outbreak + Sparkling Power Lv. 3, you can reach a rate of about 1 in 512 under ideal conditions. - Masuda Method (Breeding with Different Language Pokémon)
Breeding Pokémon from different language versions increases the chance for a shiny egg. With the Shiny Charm, the odds of hatching a shiny egg can reach 1 in 512.
Note: there is a known bug in Gen 8/9 that the initial base roll for egg shininess may be skipped when bonus rerolls (from Shiny Charm or Masuda) are applied. This means the Shiny Charm’s effect on eggs is slightly diminished compared to wild encounters. - Shiny-Locked Pokémon
Beware: certain Pokémon cannot be shiny regardless of your boosts. These include starters, certain story-locked encounters, legendary or event Pokémon that are scripted. These are “shiny-locked” encounters.

- Trade for Version-Exclusive Pokémon
Some Pokémon only appear in one version. Trade with other players to fill your Pokédex faster. - Use Raid & Coop Modes
Participating in raids and multiplayer sessions can help you catch or transfer Pokémon you’re missing. - Time your efforts around Sandwich Buffs & Outbreaks
Plan to hunt while Sparkling Power is active, and focus on mass outbreaks immediately. The buff lasts only 30 minutes. - Be Patient & Set Realistic Goals
Even with all boosts, shiny hunting is random. Don’t burn out – take breaks and pace yourself. - Check Your Pokédex Regularly
